Pictures often speak a thousand words. Well, maybe not a thousand. But certainly volumes. Like this one does to me. It is of a stray ginger cat that was rescued off the roads and given a home. It must have had a wretched existence until then. Of
watchfulness and fear. Full of threat and danger. From other territorial cats. And wicked people with stones in their hands. Also, careless motorists who account for stray cats lose several of their nine lives due to their reckless driving. Hiding under cars
and staircases of buildings during the rains. Scavenging in garbage bins for scraps of food. Going hungry most of the time. So this cat has a puzzled look of disbelief on its tiny face. I cannot imagine some kind of animal lover taking it in and giving it a
warm, cozy, and secure home. You can see that between the tears of hopelessness and misery, the cat had been crying just before it got adopted. It is confusing. It has never experienced kindness before. And it just does not know how to be grateful. Not
yet. Too often people adopt cats for selfish reasons and later cruelly abandon them on the roads when they get bored of them. I have seen it happen. So this is a comforting picture for me. People ask if cats cry. Yes, they do. All animals do. Pitiful, unspoken tears.
They suffer from raw and hurtful emotions just as we do. From grief when their owners die. Anxiety if they sense they are about to be displaced. Distress when they are abandoned or lost. Sadness when they are ignored. Fear when they are being
rejected. I don’t see why they shouldn’t. They have hearts, too. And hearts, as you and I know, are easily broken.
