if a Mantriji from Delhi has to visit Mumbai, like one Honourable fellow is doing today, why not smuggle him in at the dead of night and put him up at a five-star hotel in the vicinity of his next day’s functions? Or even the state guest house? From where in the morning, after a well-deserved night’s rest, breakfast, shower, and shave, he can set out for his appointments without inconveniencing anybody?
What I cannot understand…
… is what are these Mantri types so busy doing at night in Delhi that they cannot travel to Mumbai? Why do they have to be ceremoniously brought in only during the day with flashing lights and wailing siren escorts like they were Team India triumphantly returning with the World Cup? Why does a beleaguered city have to come to a grinding halt for hours just because one man selfishly and insensitively wants to travel from the airport to his functions and back in our peak hour daytime traffic?
What I cannot understand…
… is why our Chief Minister, who was an autorickshaw driver before he got sick of Mumbai’s traffic problems and joined politics, does not tell the Delhi Mantriji what ground reality is like over here? And persuade him to travel at night? Why does he allow the sick and dying in ambulances to get stuck in gridlocked traffic caused by the Mantriji’s visit? Are flyers to miss their flights? Students exams? Officegoers their day’s work? Why does he put an already spent and exhausted police force on its toes for hours doing bandobast only for the Mantriji to whiz by in a few seconds?
What I cannot understand…
… is why if this Mantriji is crisscrossing the city causing misery and madness for miles to reach the Naval Dockyard and visit a warship he cannot just be airlifted by chopper from the airport to the Navy’s Heliport in the Dockyard or to the helipad on the warship itself and back? An operation that the Indian Navy would be most up to. And which would cause no inconvenience to Mumbai’s motorists already distressed by the construction of the Metro and Coastal Road and east-west bridges pulled down for repair and flyovers waiting to be inaugurated?
And what I cannot also understand…
…is what the DCP of Traffic Police, a khaki-blooded Mumbaikar who knows the roads better than most, mean by issuing a press alert declaring that the Mantriji’s route is critical and, therefore, other Mumbaikars be advised to plan their travel today? The city is on the move, everybody needs to travel and get somewhere, how do they manage this trick without canceling their appointments or calling in sick at work?
