‘Numbing’ is any form of activity that you use to pacify or desensitize your feelings or emotion, so that you don’t get hurt or offended in any way. But by desensitizing yourself to vulnerability and helplessness, one also desensitizes oneself to love and affection, belonging, compassion, originality, exploration, and all of life’s good things. Every valuable endeavor in one’s lesson from life —intimate love and compassion, bond and relationship, or a novel business—is petrifying. These things are dangerous and risky and not for the person with a weak heart. They require courage. And they can’t coexist with fear and anxiety. When one opens up to life’s utmost prospects one is also giving life the chance to break one’s heart, but still believing that it won’t do so … and the risk is worthy of a reward.
