This is an incredible picture…
Major Abdul Rahim, an Afghan veteran who lost both of his hands in the battle, received a pair of hands from T. G. Joseph, a Kerala resident who was certified brain dead following a car accident. Francisca, Joseph’s wife, is staring at the same hands that previously held her affectionately.
Dr. Subrahmania Iyer (in blue shirt) performed the transplant procedure at Kochi’s Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences. Humanity is a Hindu doctor, a Christian organ donor, and a Muslim receiver.
The One God Almighty is magnificent.
It all started when Rahim, an Afghan Army bomb disposal expert, lost his hands in an explosion in 2012 while defusing his 31st device. He struggled with his handicap for the next three years.
When Joseph died in a car accident in 2015, it was determined that his hands would be donated to an Afghan soldier.
A team of specialists led by Dr. Iyer at the Kochi hospital successfully conducted the transplant.
It made international headlines.
Rahim recovered a significant portion of his hand capabilities following the transplant and extensive rehabilitation. In war-torn Afghanistan, he rejoined the army and defused 2,011 additional explosives.
In return, when Rahim visited Kochi for checks every year, he would bring sweets to Joseph’s wife and children and became a family friend. Though communication was difficult because Rahim only knew Pashto, they overcame this limitation by using touch language.
Then, last year, Rahim died while defusing a bomb planted by the Taliban in Kabul. Along with the courageous Afghan soldier, Joseph’s hands were shattered. The news of Rahim’s death shook his relatives. A shadow of doom dropped on Kerala’s remote Ernakulum district, and tears were poured for him.
Francisca, Joseph’s widow, stated, “Though Joseph left us, a portion of him lingered on.”
Rahim served as a living memorial for us…”
Joseph and Rahim, rest in peace.
