I met her in a producer’s office. On a morning when it rained. #JanhviKapoor looked prettier than in the posters of her film. I thought she wet herself in the rain. Janhvi corrected me with an amused smile. She was freshly showered. While we talked, she tucked her feet up on a swivel chair happily and drummed on the table with nails that were chipped. “Not bitten with anxiety,” she said.
I saw a young #Sridevi in her. Not so much in the appearance. The infectious giggle was the same. Also the expressive hands. And like her late and celebrated mother, Janhvi spoke volumes through her large chocolate brown eyes. I was amazed to learn she had studied acting at the famous Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in New York. “Why?” I asked, “You’ve got Sridevi’s genes!”
She replied, “I have Sridevi’s genes doesn’t mean that I’m anything like her. I think there are similarities in us. But that’s pure genetics. I don’t think talent gets transferred like that.” I thought of this when I saw #GunjanSaxenaTheKargilGirl, the highly acclaimed war biographical for which Janhvi has got viciously trolled for being a “nepotist choice” in the casting. She’s amazing in it.
A good film is a good film; a great performance is a great performance. Nepotism cannot make this happen. Nor can nepotism influence viewers and critics to dislike a worthy entertainer backed by a whopping execution from the lead actor who is a star kid. Bollywood is full of talented and hopeful outsiders. Like Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan. Or Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma. The rise from wannabe to superstar happens with perseverance and determination. The struggle is part of the journey. Nepotism is no guarantor of stardom.
