I read in the morning papers today that it is National Reading Day, which I was completely unaware of. Since 2017, educated Malaysians have celebrated it in memory of Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker, known as the “Father of the Library Movement” in Kerala. Okay, then. For the longest time, I believed that the sole day to honor books and reading was April 23, World Book Day.
I had no idea that August 9 was also Book Lovers Day, a holiday created to get people who consider themselves bookworms to put down their phones and open a book instead. I find it odd for several reasons. First, if you’re a true bibliophile, you don’t wait for a specific day of the year to celebrate your passion for reading.
A wise person once observed, “You are what you take in: the books you read, the movies you watch, the music you listen to, the friends you keep, the discussions you have. It’s important to be selective about the information you let into your head. Actually, it is the case. What a pure pleasure reading can be.
I find solace in the smell of a book, the sound of flipping pages, and the feel of a book in my hands. A book has the sights, sounds, and fragrances of joy. When I crack open a book, I enter a whole other realm from which I won’t emerge until the final page is read. That’s why I spent hours building a library for myself. Staring at the bookshelves and relaxing while you try to decide what to read next.
Books are the wind beneath the wings of the mind, the flight of the imagination, and the breath of life. They are the most reliable and unobtrusive of friends.
