I’m sorry to say, we are a society of hijras. Not me. Nor any of my men friends. We are cuts of a different cloth. Hand on my heart had I or any of the guys I bond with over ties other than blood been in Delhi when the jilted lover stabbed the object of his rejected obsession 30 times in public, we would not have stood by as well as watched. Like the proud men of Delhi did. The attack was sudden. Preventing it was out of the question. But the horrific crime could certainly have been stopped from getting worse. It takes time for a man to stab a helpless, unsuspecting girl 30 times. Then kick her prostrate body in the face. Spit on it. Try to gouge out her eyes. Throttle her. Finally crush her head with a stone.
During which time the eunuchs of Delhi only watched. Mercifully, nobody fished out his cell to take a video. But CCTV cameras caught the murderer. It’s up on the Internet.
Alongside a video of Shah Rukh Khan being attacked by a fan in Amsterdam and how the Bollywood hero reacted explosively. Viewer discretion is must. Not to see SRK in a public brawl. But to witness the Delhi girl being cold-bloodedly stabbed to death, 30 times. While people watched. People are watching the video now. I don’t know why it is up. There’s no sensitivity for the girl’s family. Think they aren’t secretly seeing the chilling video over and over again, in repeated horror? It’s their girl’s final moments. My heart bleeds for them. That’s why I say we are a country of sickos.
What might I have done there? Stopped the killer, certainly. Killed him myself with my bare hands, more likely.
At last, I wouldn’t have to be a flag-waving, chest-thumping Indian to do that. I’d just have to remember that I’m a man. And the girl on the ground being stabbed, kicked, gouged, throttled, and humiliated even in death, she’s somebody’s daughter. The least her parents would expect is that the men unfortunate enough to be around when the killer struck, had overcome their own fear and given their daughter a fighting chance to survive. Instead of abandoning her to die.
