Amitabh Bachchan must have been proud of the recent debut of his grandson Agastya Nanda in Hindi movies. He dislikes the term Bollywood. Combining Bombay with Hollywood. In Mr. Bachchan’s presence, those who know what’s good for them avoid calling the Hindi film industry Bollywood.
I agree with his concerns about being compared to Hollywood in India.
We felt like a poor cousin of the American cinema metonym.
We’re better. Also bigger. Our films compete with Hollywood blockbusters like Mission Impossible, James Bond, and Fast & Furious at the box office.
We have global hero worship for our actors. Out in public, mobbed. In an old social media video, Sylvester Stallone (Rocky and Rambo) and his family were politely denied a table at a premium LA restaurant for arriving without a reservation. Imagine if Akshay Kumar or Salman Khan experienced this! Today, Agastya, the son of Shweta Bachchan, enters the realm of famous cinema and glittering stardom with Zoya Akhtar’s musical-comedy ‘The Archies’.
Dare to call this nepotism. Not so. Nepotism is the Indian term meaning sour grapes. The term “Agastya” refers to the way of birth. Is it nepotism when Anant, Akash, and Isha Ambani take over Reliance Industries from Mukesh Ambani? It’s their fate. Nobody can dispute that. Their entry into the family business is inevitable. The future of their professions is up to them.
I recall Mr. Bachchan’s satisfaction and joy at Abhishek’s 2000 debut in J. P. Dutta’s ‘Refuge’. Life justifiably treated him well. After 23 years, Abhishek and he celebrate the birth of another family actor.
