I love it when I discover that I still have presents left over from Christmas. Like this exciting French goody box that looks like a child’s book of Fairy Tales. It’s got 11 limited edition mini jars of fruit spreads and one of honey. The box is titled ‘12 Days of Christmas’ and, as the old carol goes, it’s got a Partridge in a Pear Tree on the lid. My warm and caring friend Khushnum Dastur of LA who gave it to me is a hell of a home patissier and baker, and probably knew my taste buds were jaded with the jams and marmalades of Kissan and Mala’s that I have been consuming over the years. It’s not that I don’t care for them. They are exceptionally good. But beyond Strawberry, Mango, Pineapple and Mixed Fruit jams, and Orange marmalade, which I have in turn, there’s nothing to look forward to. Now, oh my, there’s a wide choice with such exotic combinations like Apricot and Peach; Cherry with Elderflower; Chestnut and Orange; Fig with Cardamom; Grapefruit and Dragon Fruit; Rhubarb and Strawberry; Mango,
Raspberry and Lime; Plum with Spice; and Orange with Grapefruit. I don’t know which jar to open first. Interestingly, the manufacturer of ‘12 Days of Christmas’ is Bonne Maman, a reputed French brand of jam, marmalade, compotes, desserts, cakes, and biscuits. Bonne Maman means Grandmother. And the company claims its spreads are made with ingredients found in a home kitchen and with the love and traditional experience of a
grandmother. I can’t wait to find out.
