A young mother with a four-month-old baby on a 10-hour flight from Seoul to San Francisco distributed a goody bag to each of the 200 other passengers. Inside were Korean candy, chewing gum, and earplugs with an advance apology note in case her baby screamed during the flight. Fearing snide comments and nasty looks, she hoped people would be understanding and not make her baby feel unwelcome.
The note, written as if by the baby, read, “Hello, I am Jun Woo. I am four months old. Today I am traveling to the US with my mom and grandma to visit my aunt. It is my first flight. Normally, when I’m nervous and scared, I’ll cry or make a little noise. I’ll try to be calm, but this cannot be guaranteed. Please use the earplugs if my voice gets too loud. Enjoy your trip. Thank you.”
The thing is, while sweet and thoughtful and demonstrative of a culture respecting the freedom of others, the gesture that received abundant praise on Facebook was unnecessary. Imagine the effort it must have taken this Korean mother to organize 200 goody bags. No parent should have to apologize for a baby being a baby. For we were all babies at one point in life, weren’t we?
PS: Incidentally, there was not a peep out of Jun Woo on the 10-hour flight.
