A perception note
I am all in favour of being optimistic and believing the glass is half full. But this I don’t understand. In the Clean Survey 2021, or Swachh Survekshan conducted by the Central Government, how does Mumbai come to be India’s 37th cleanest city? It’s a dubious distinction. And will appear hilarious to all living and working here. I would have thought the city qualified for being topmost among India’s dirtiest cities.
But some government babu with jaundiced eyes rose-tinted spectacles and a lot of imagination carried out this annual survey. And he kindly decided to be generous with the nomenclature.
Swachh Survekshan
Swachh Survekshan is a survey of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan that ambitiously aims to make India clean and free of open defecation. You and I know that’s not happening in Mumbai. Navi Mumbai is the fourth cleanest city on the survey and Thane the 14th.
That should tell you how clean or dirty Mumbai is. But incredibly, the city had the gumption to apply for a five star ranking in the garbage-free status! And deservingly scored zero. Look at the picture. If it were not for the docked boats would you know this was a beach in Mumbai? Can we count ourselves among the cleanest? Even at the 37th spot?
