What happened to ‘Love Is…,’ the adorable single-frame comic strip that was so famous in the 1970s and 1980s all over the world?
I recall two popular weeklies in India carrying it: ‘The Sun’ and ‘JS.’ Then it halted. Inexplicably.
Love Is… seemed to vanish from the scene at a time that couldn’t have been more ironic.
In 1986, Neil Diamond’s major song “Love Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” was out. Today, we remember the song. The comic strip is as well.
Kim Casali, a New Zealand cartoonist, created ‘Love Is…’ in the 1960s. A sequence of love messages she made for her future spouse inspired the cartoon.
It was first published in booklets before being serialized in a newspaper under the pen name “Kim” in 1970. Soon after, it was syndicated worldwide, and in India, in addition to youth magazines like ‘The Sun’ and ‘JS,’ ‘Love Is…’ began appearing in Bombay’s crusading morning newspaper ‘The Daily’ in the 1980s.
“Love Is…being able to say you’re sorry,” one of Kim’s most popular designs, was promoted abroad for many years in print, on cards, and as souvenirs.
The beginning of the comic corresponded with the release of the 1970 film ‘Love Story.’ “Love means never having to say you’re sorry,” says the film’s famous line.
In 1975, Kim’s husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and she decided to leave the animation to be with him. Love must have died, then…
