Every day, the morning newspapers tell me about the plight of some politician, some government babu or policeman, who got overtly greedy and is now in the custody of a law agency, either the police, CBI, Enforcement Directorate, or Income Tax, being investigated for corruption or money laundering, and spending his days at the Arthur Road Jail or Taloja in discomfort and disgrace. Their bank accounts as well as their properties have been seized. The assets of their family are in the investigation. In jail, they don’t receive any sort of comfort. No home food. And no air-conditioner. No soft bed. All they get is jail food. Sleep on the hard floor in airless barracks. Not even little things to give them joy.
If they fall sick and require hospitalization, then the courts will insist they get admitted to a municipal hospital, and get the medical care and treatment meant for criminals. No private hospitals and top drawer doctors for them. And all the while, the papers will report the progress of their investigation, their further plight, how they get shuffled from one law agency to another, how their bail applications get rejected and custody extended, how further and damaging evidence of their wicked ways is being uncovered, how the opposition uses them as fodder in the assembly to take apart the government, how the case is building up and looking bad for them and every little things that is unfortunate for them.
What can be worse…..
Though what can be worse for a grasping politician used to living the good life and wanting to add 100 crores every month to his ill-gotten kitty through extortion and corruption than to be stripped of his position, power and pomp, and put into prison! I often ask people what is it that matters most to them. And often the answer is good health or peace of mind. To not go hungry, have enough in the bank, and to sleep in the comfort of your own bed at night are topmost among life’s great blessings. The security behind this is priceless. Ultimately, it’s the little things that matter…
