More than the Republic Day parade in New Delhi yesterday, what I enjoyed seeing was the Mumbai Police’s short film on Instagram on its Nirbhaya Squad launched to tackle crime against women. Film director Rohit Shetty has a reputation for making gripping cop movies in the Singham-Simmba-Sooryavanshi style. This film is soul-stirring thanks to Amitabh Bachchan’s gritty narration. See the film. And tell the womenfolk of your family to save the Nirbhaya Squad’s helpline – 103.
I hope the Nirbhaya Squad is effective. Back in the day when policemen drove around in Willy’s jeeps and Black Marias, and CID cops in plainclothes cycled around at night, eve-teasers, molesters, and right at the scene of the crime, those who only targeted women were dealt with swiftly and severely. In full public view. The police would brutally trash them without any mercy with lathis and belts. The other sickos in public with dirty intentions toward women were exposed to a harsh example of them.
However, self-righteous citizens who had never seen their own women treated so humiliatingly filed petitions against the police’s highhandedness and defended the molester’s constitutional rights. There was no thought about the difficulties faced by women due to these sickos and perverts. The police were reprimanded and had to desist its rough and ready ways of justice. A pity, because a crime against women had not been sympathetically addressed by Parliament and the Supreme Court. It should be remembered that, for the real Nirbhaya to get justice, it took nearly 8 years.
The Sad Part
What saddens me is the Nirbhaya Squad at every police station does not attend a woman’s call for help in time. Anything could delay them. The molesters and eve-teasers will just move on to another victim and another place. Our country’s shame is that a hundred men will watch in awe and horror as a jilted lover stabs his girlfriend multiple times on a busy street and then pours acid over her. Not one will come to her rescue. Or even raise his voice in protest. It is more likely that they will whip out their cell phones to take pictures and videos instead.
What happens to people at such times? These people outnumber the sadists. Rather than step up together and teach him a lesson, they become mute observers. Fear sets in. The body goes into shock. The mind refuses to think. The heart turns cold. A dry throat prevents the voice from speaking. There are butterflies in the stomach. The legs turn to jelly. They become incapable of any action. Abusers, molesters, even teasers, and bullies who publicly commit crimes against women know this and take advantage of it.
