While conversing, we did ask Ankit, Do you believe in Astrology. His answer truly touched our heart when he said, “See, we are bound to get biased if we follow this science blindly. He explained: let’s suppose, I asked about one person from the astrologer that “How will be my relation with an XYZ person”. If the astrologer said you will not have a healthy relationship with this XYZ individual. Then as a normal person, one slightest wrong communication will make me think that Yes I was informed about this. I may not put in those sincere efforts to create that great bonding. If I had not consulted the astrologer than, yes, I may keep on trying to maintain good relations and we may have a nice bonding for longer years.”

Ankit presented his point that we tend to have certain preconceived notions about others without actually knowing the person we make judgments about, and our communication does happen in that manner.

Early life

You all must be curious to know-how has been the upbringing that made him so successful at such esteemed platforms. Well, it’s time to know his story. Ankit Nagpal is a Delhite. He was born to a simple middle-class family in South Delhi. The family does lay stress on creating the right value system and approach towards life and society. Ankit had been a party boy since his teenage and had seen the world of socialization much early. The most exciting part was that he could make sense out of this non-sense at a tender age. It was clubbed with his dad’s profile, a senior journalist, and happens to be at esteem events, premiers, movie launches, film festivals, and page3 events.

As an observer, he was absorbing how the industry works and how you create your network,. All these things were adding subconsciously to his personality, and he was learning good and successful tips for himself. Indeed, these are reasons why he can maintain the balance in this glamorous industry. The mature head with the right thinking has made him a man of substance.

His journey as an Entrepreneur

Ankit was clueless about what he will be doing in his life. But it happened that he accompanied his sister for their first business venture, where she had started the business of PR. Ankit Nagpal fondly recalls helping his sister humbly design cool logos, printing visiting cards, making handmade cards, doing bulk photocopies of the pamphlets, and lots of such work. He was doing out of excitement and being the younger bro, with ample ideal time, wisely utilized as the family thought.

With the right approach, guidance given by their father started. The name of the company, initially called BANG PR & Features, is an acronym of initials of family members’ names. Yes, that’s how a sweet journey began from a middle-class Delhi family. Father leveraged his few contacts from his career as a journalist throughout his life. Gradually they got assignments. The siblings handled PR for various events like the Cinefan – Asian Film festival held until 2012, Delhi International Arts Festival, AAFT, Contemporary Arts Week, Neemrana Music Foundation, and many more.

Challenges

In less than a year, life took another turn when his sister got married, and she decided to discontinue the family venture. As Ankit’s genuine interest was in wedding planning during his sister’s wedding, he did the entire wedding planning. He put his heart and soul into trying some unique concepts under Wedding planning. People widely appreciated this wedding planning and loved his ideas. People had never heard of wedding planning and concept weddings during that time.

After the marriage, his sister eventually decided not to continue with the PR start-up. Now Ankit was back to square one, with his mind was more towards wedding and event planning, but the PR company already had reputed clients. It was challenging to take a step back as Ankit always believed in commitments. However, Ankit decided to manage the PR firm with experience that would come in handy. Now, Ankit was the sole decision-maker, and he took the assignments on his own and started building on them.

Not limiting his work field, he promoted fests and fairs of all kinds, be it art, music, contemporary art, Indian art, tattoo festivals. His PR Company also launched the movie Gangs of Wasseypur, Bas Ek Pal, Omkara, and others under the Cinefan Film Festival. Even though the city of Mumbai is the heart of all celebrity action of high profiles, Ankit Nagpal chose to stay closer to home in Delhi. He argues the quantity of work is more in Delhi than in Mumbai, which was crucial for the proper growth of the company.

His Role Model

When we asked this question about his role model, he said, “My Father, he is a straightforward man though he has been in great power as a journalist in his life. However, Ankit has never seen him misuse it against anyone or himself, which Ankit admires. Of course, I have learned a lot from him in this Business of Public Relations, and I still seek advice from him” he also added, “in fact, he writes so well that even now, there are times when he writes press releases for me which we present to our clients.”

While we were chatting about the ones he admires, he added this with a big smile on his face “My mother has always been my strength. I am a very emotional person at heart, and I can’t see my parents in any distress ever. My mother has seen tough times while I was a child, and now it’s time I should do whatever I can for my parents.”

He credits Ms. Rita Gangwani, a famous personality development coach, for his unofficial mentor. He never got trained by her one-on-one but has learned a lot from observing her etiquettes. Her way of life, and a little sneak-peek here and there from her grooming classes, has helped him a lot. He has immense respect for her realistic, no-filter, straightforward personality.

Ankit Nagpal – as an individual 

Until now, we have seen the professional life of Ankit. We did have another interview session where we were curious about Ankit as an individual, his philosophy towards life, and what gives him strength.

His answers were straightforward he said, I love to network and party, but I know how to distinguish between the professional connections and my close friends. Yes, most pub-owners and prominent event organizers know me well, and I know them. They honor me whenever I am around. But I make sure that I clear my dues and not just get obliged by them. As I try not to have any obligations, I prefer to pay for my meetings, private dinners, and parties.

Ankit Nagpal – Lifestyle

Ankit depends on his friends for a healthy lifestyle. As he stated, “I have had amazing friends since my childhood. The company of life-long friends gives me liberation from the hectic work life. I travel with them around the globe, I party with them, and it’s safe to share many of my tame shenanigans with them. Having friends when you were not a person of importance, a.k.a. renowned celebrity, allows them to be casual and ineffective. They are not bothered by what I am today for the world, and that’s what I like” Similarly, he also loves to care for his pals and vice-versa.

His other interests

By an old saying – those who are achievers will excel in everything as it is their habit to put their best foot forward in everything they do. We realized this as we spoke with him and how openly he shared his thoughts about everything. He takes an interest in many things other than his business and profession.

He has learned ballroom dancing. Besides that, he loves playing Badminton and Loves Driving as he is very fond of Cars. He once took pressure point therapy and got so impressed that he decided to learn about this therapy from an expert and did so.

Ankit Nagpal credits his father for making him realize that time is of utmost value, helping him stay grounded. The nature of his work lets people believe they have to be formal and even careful of not ruining their relationship with him. It hinders the organic development of connection build-up, and hence his work-life never merges with the personal one.

What matters to Ankit

It is pretty common to think that you have the power over what will get printed next in the papers. You have the chance to put yourself there too. But Ankit finds his relevance when he gets to work for others and not just mindlessly puts himself out there for the sake of gaining fame. He is behind the camera and finds it rather obnoxious to promote himself. He would prefer if someone else speaks about his PR work, Events, and his firm.

Being simple is most challenging in today’s world.

There are a lot of stereotypes related to the industry that here people work ONLY around worldly things. People see everyone in the industry through these lenses and easily judge everyone as superficial or pretentious. Not going into its validity, Ankit faced the same judgments or instances where he was accepted to act in a way that implies that he is more important than the rest. It is not once but several times that he has to battle to fight against this preconceived so-called industry image, and he has to prove that he is “his genuine self.”

Once, when Ankit Nagpal ordered food from his close friends’ restaurant and insisted on paying his bill. However, his friend has constantly refused to accept it from him due to his work profile. His honesty reflects when he humbly admits that he takes pride he might get for his efforts but never misused his position to take advantage just for the sake of it.

Leading by example 

We realized that he is a very straightforward person in conversation with him. Clarity of thought seemed pretty obvious when he shared this one incident with us. In the early days of his career, he recalls that a politician approached him to handle his PR.  He was getting subjected to behavior taken for granted and ownership by him. It made him uncomfortable and made him leave the meeting immediately for the sake of his respect. It only led to a call from the same politician who apologized and discussed his association. This incident developed into a friendship and more work where respect was mutual. He also said, “I would rather not take up the work than do it half-heartedly.”

Respect is a priority over money; it doesn’t matter if you are in a start-up, in dire need. You are what you work for and what you ask for. He has the right attitude. Respecting yourself allows you to have the right attitude.

Coming Up with his next venture

With already so much on his plate, Ankit sets out to outdo himself with more projects of all kinds in the future. Having experience of being an eminent jury member and groomer for various pageants, he is launching a grooming academy, “Groom to Bloom by Ankit Nagpal.” He has, in fact, judged shows with Bipasha Basu, Prince Narula, Rannvijay Singha, Himanshi Khurana, Dino Morea, Kainaat Arora, and many other celebrities. He sees himself also hosting a big-scale fashion week someday. He takes it one thing at a time and treats his projects as his children giving them all the attention it needs. When Ankit started in this industry, he was new and did not have any financial and technical support. He had lost his money for the work done in the industry and never recovered.
